If you had a short, there ought to be some fuse(s) blowing; or failing that something would be toasted by now. It appears the power supply is intermittent. Banging on the dash rattles the connection enough to reconnect the power. Barring some type of loose component in the unit, a full check of the power wiring from the grid to the deck is in order. Look for a bad connector, or if there is an inline fuse on the power wiring that came with the deck, the fuse holder may be defective. This is assuming the main's/fuses are not loose or not securely installed.
