3 month, 3000 no matter what oil I use. Just habit.

I got the same stuff aswell, but i change every 3grand aswell. Mr. Lous, do you change every three months even if you don't drive 3000 miles?

We do engine oil analysis at the proving grounds and 3k miles is overkill. even with conventional oils. It takes alot more than people are led to beleive I change mine every 4,500 on the buick.

Even though the oil can go 15k.... There is still an oil filter to change.

I look at it this way, oil is way cheaper than a new engine. I change mine as close to 3,000 miles as I can even though I run Mobil 1.

Yup. Most of the time...the Trans Am gets its oil changed at around 1000 miles.

Damn thing MUST be in tip-top shape. How many miles? At the rate your going your motor will last up 1,000,000 miles, which ain't bad if you ask me.

U do realize that u are wasting perfectly good oil right? Ur not even giving the oil time to start thinking of breaking down. Hypi is right oil last longer than what is said the 3k, 3 month thing is more for staying on the safe side, but 1000 miles is just a waste of perfectly good oil.

yup. Accually at CAT we found that chagine oil too often can hurt componets. When oil removes gunk and debirs, it is kept in a suspension in the oil untill it reaches the filter. constant draining and refiling of your oil redeposits this gunk and sludge on internals. Since new engines are not dirty right away but as they age, this becomes more severe.

Damn I would be eaten out of house and home if I had to change the oil in the powerstroke ever 3k. with a 15 quart oiling system. I could not support it.

It may hold it's viscosity for 15000miles, but oil becomes contaminated, specially with high milage motors or even when they are ran hard on a daily basis. Just alittle cocktail trivia, they say 3 months due to oil has a shelf life, and 3000miles due to the average break down and contamination. Most manuals will say round 5-6000. Also if you have a high milage motor and use the same oil, take note that different brands of oil use different detergents which build up filling in scores in the cylinder walls. That's why you can buy a used vehicle that doesn't smoke, change the oil and now it's a misquito killer. Easy way to think of this is like your shampoo, when you first use it your scalp feels clean then after a few uses it never seems to feel the same till you switch to another. Just for the record changing you oil excessively is not going to deposit sludge. If your oil is always dirty, assuming you don't have excessive blow by, dump a couple quarts through with the drain plug out when you change the oil till it comes out clear. It may take after a few changes but you'll notice it will stay cleaner, hence presurving your bearings. Also change it when it's warm this way the oil is thinner and drains quicker. Anyway I hope I may have answered your questions or concerns. Take care all! L8r

alright.

I have always used fully synthetic mobil 1 5/10W-30, and changed it and the filter every 2,500. I have 151,000 miles on my junt and it still screams crazy lound and accellerates smooth and doesn't vibrate or smoke or anything (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!)

My 'Maro has one of dem thurr fancy warnin' lights that tell me when the oil needs a changin'....

Reckon it work might good but I still check'er erevy time and again...

(But in serious none redneckness, When I first got my car it had an oil change about 700 miles ago but after about 500 more miles my lgiht came on and the oil was thick and black, It had been sitting for several months since its last oil change, would that have caused it to get so crudy? or maybe it was just the wrong type of oil...)

just because oil is black does not mean it is bad.

Right now it has 28,600 miles. Pulling the motor before 30,000 for a bigger and better version of it.

Yup, it is just working.

So what are you gonna do with the old LS1? I gonna do a swap into my 3rd sometime in the future....

The old LS1 will have zero accessories. May not even have heads.
I was thinking about keeping it, unless someone makes an offer for it. It would be shortblock, cam, and heads most likely.
For now though, it will sit on a stand in the garage.

How much will you sell it for? I gotta start somewhere.

What people seem not to realize is that the biggest advantage of synthetic oil is it able to operate at higher temps without loosing it's viscosity(or thickness) than conventional oil. Unless your running a motor built for high performance or turbo/superchargers or constantly run hard, conventional oil is sufficient for most vehicles due to the fact that tempuratures don't get too excessive for conventional oil.
