Anyone know how to replace a cabin filter for a 1997 avalon. I read it needs to be replaced every 15,000 miles or if there is a stale smell in the car. Any help would be appreciated.

Just did it on my 2001--don't know if they're identical, but should be very similar I think.
All you have to do is remove the 5 screws that hold the glove box in place, then pull it out. Be careful--there is a wire connected to it at the top left--so don't pull too far or hard.
Once you can lower the glove box, you'll see the filter door at the top of the blower assembly. Just pop the door off and replace the filter. Note that the filters are directional, so when you install the new filter, make sure it's oriented the same way as the old. There are directional arrows on the side of the filter.

The 1997 Avalon does not have a cabin filter. I removed the glove compartment and it only has the fan. However, the 2004 Toyota Sienna does have a cabin filter, and the replacement process is very easy. Remove the glove compartment as previously mentioned. It is very, very easy. You will win points with the wife and kids..... :)
