The Camaro That Wasn't

Hey there all, i got a request to keep the stories coming so i went out and looked for some blood to boil last night, and i found some!

it's about 7:30PM just after my Sunday shift at the shop when i'm at the lights heading up the hill Citadel. I roll on up to the stop light much to pleasure, to the right of an '84ish Camaro Z28. It was a younger guy too, so i knew it would go on. The thing was rust, but it seemed to rumble so i started to rev.

He looked over and this thing ROARED! i mean it ROARED at me. I was starting to think "shit, i just picked the wrong old camaro to try my luck" when the light turned green and i hit it. The road was damp so my tires spun for a second before the traction control kicked in, and when i got a grip, i started to move. The looked beside and saw the Camaro falling behind!

I looked in my rearview for a better view and the kid had laid down all the power the camaro had, and had burnt out on the wet pavement. By now i'm a 1/2 block away and he's just starting to power down on me.

This is where is got interesting, as we were climbing a pretty significant hill. He caught up to me about 1/2 way up and just smiled, but his smile quickly turned to a look like "HUH??!!" as i started to pull away. Having switched off the traction control, i let the supercharger do the work and haul ass right on up.

I guess this guy couldn't keep a grip on the hill, or the car was just too old as i beat him to the top of the hill by a 1/2 car length and had the inside lane on the next curve, so i managed to catch the red light first.

When we'd stopped i put down my window and here's what was said:

ME: Nice race, what year is it?

HIM: Yeah, it's a '78. That's the supercharged edition isn't it?

ME: Yeah, SSEI. It's ok. What's under the hood?

HIM: Not much, the V8 was dead when i bought it so i dropped in
an '84 caprice V8 and turbocharged it.

Then the light turned green and i had to go.

So what's up with this? Didn't the 84 Caprice have a 350 small block? And with a turbocharger, why the hell didn't he stomp me? I'm wondering if he just couldn't drive it right (but it's an auto like my car!)
or if the thing was just a total rust bucket inside and out.

I don't understand the theory here. I won, sure and simple, but how?!!

Let me know people, i need a hand with this one. :smoka:

I think the caprice has a 305. If this camaro really had a turbo then he should have smoked you. But, your traction control and front wheel drive had the advantage on wet and steep roads. If you had been an a dry dragstrip then he would have smoked you. But, hey in real life driving your not on a dragstrip. A win is a win

I don't know what a 78 was like but the 80's Firebirds and Camaros weren't very powerful compared to the new ones. I have a 88 Firebird Trans Am GTA and it has like 235 hp I believe. I imagine the Z28 was like 210 or 220. The supercharged Bonneville is what 240 or something? But he didn't have the original V8 anyways so I guess what I'm saying doesn't amount to much oh well.

The Bonneville has 245 horsepower so you were close, but i figured that wouldn't make any difference cuz the camaro is lighter and has a bigger engine.

My car is 4000 pounds, that makes 245 horsepower insignificant against a true sports car. Not trying to dis my car, and i'm not saying he should've kicked my ass, 94svt5.0 said it the way i figured it.

Oh well, i can win 'em, i just don't understand 'em.

4000 thats pretty close to what my S-10 weighs. I can't remember if its 4200 or 4600, oh well.

Your S-10 weighs that much? Really?!!

I wouldn't have though those trucks weigh that much, i figured maybe 2000 pounds for the whole deal.
