r12 replacement

1993 Ranger. Now that warm weather has finally returned to this area, I used A/C for the first time. Compressor cycles on and off, and a guy I work with thinks I need to recharge the A/C. My truck uses R12, which is now ridiculously expensive. Does anyone know anything about replacement refridgerants? Anything compatible with R12? I want comfort, but I can't justify spending too much on this. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, TG

Well, hopefully I can be of some help. I also have a 93 ranger, and was looking for the r12 refridgerant. I've found some r12 recharge kits and replacement kits, that come with everything you need to recharge your r12 system. Less than 50 bucks. Yeah, for less than 50 bucks... heres a link:

Hopefully you have an eBay account. If not, I HIGHlY recommend it. Ebay has saved me TONS of money, and has helped me find things that are now obsolete. Anyways, hope this works for you.

Instead of recharging with R12 freon, which is now terribly expensive, why not buy a conversion kit for 134a? For less than $50 you can buy what is necessary to convert your system and cans of $134a are cheap by comparison: about $3-4 per 12 oz can.

Then, should your system develope a leak later, you can recharge with 134a for very little money.

yes you guys should just buy the conversion kit. all it is is a couple of screw on fittings wich might seal your leaks you have. you do have a leak if you have to add freon!!!!

I have a nearly full system--is there any product out there such as Hot Shot that is fully compatible with R-12 that can be added to existing system without evacuating and recharging. Thanks

yes there is,get the freeze-12 , its the direct replacement for r12 and is alot cheper and better than 134
