(Feel free to move this thread if any of the Mods consider it in the wrong forum, I figured if anywhere the street racing guys could appreciate a good sleeper)

Here's my dilema guys. My new car is being a pain in the ass but thats a story for another time. I can sell it and still pull a nice profit so i'll have a good amount of money for mods. Tell me if this sounds like a really stupid idea. I want a sleeper, something that doesn't look fast at all, but has decent body styling and is a little fun to drive, it has to be new(read as used but nice) and semi-reliable.

My idea was to get a 2003 chevy cavalier that I found, its a 5 speed with a 2.2L ecotec and 30k on the engine. It has decent styling and the ecotec is a decent motor that takes well to a turbo/SC. My friend has a 01 and he was telling me about a 200hp+ cavalier, sounded pretty nice to me I imagine if I left it stock exterior wise besides a 1.5" drop no one would think twice about racing a puny looking cavalier.

With the Getrag german engineered transmission that it has, shifts really smooth I like that too, with a short throw kit it would be nice. I can get the car for around 6300$ that would leave me about 4-5k$ to mod it. Think its a bad idea? Any other suggestions I'm open to also.

Cliffnotes:
1.New car sucks
2.Want a sleeper
3.Thinking of getting a 03 cavalier 5-speed with 30k on it for 6k and than having 4-5k left to turbocharge it

Thats actually a pretty good idea if I could find one in my area within my price range. Last time I checked a few out they were at the cheapest 17-18k i'd go for it in a heartbeat but I'm just trying to avoid financing anything.

The VR4 is actually a sexy ass machine too but when I checked them out last week the only one here had 122k on it and they wanted 9,000$. :uhoh:

92-95 Civic VX Hatchback, swap for a B18C1 and TC that little shit. The VX hatch is the lightest model 5th Gen Civic. It should be really inexpensive to purchase one. Competlely unsuspecting.

You can possibly find one for about less than 2 grand easy. The swap should cost you about $3500, and boosting it will probably cost another $1500. Plus you'll still have all that money left over to play with the motor and turn up the boost. Also, suspension, and your brakes can be upgraded too. I am biased to Hondas as well :)

Very common thing to do, but hey if everyone's doing it, it must be workin' right? Just my :2cents:.

CivRacer95

I'm guestimating...never done it myself. Plus, it depends on how much you get the motor for, where you get it, and who can install it for you.

Why not get an MR2? You can get one in decent shape for $7k (probably a 91), and with the $3k you have, you can get a new turbo (ATS TD06), exhaust, intake, and MBC. Should run 12s. People underestimate MR2s. Everyone is going to be biased to what they own. Jayson is going to log in, and tell you to go with the Cav. Mr. Lous is going to tell you to get a Camaro/Firebird with an LS1

The MR2 is definitely an option I just never looked at it as a sleeper but that might be because a friend of mine has a 91 and I know how quick they are. The styling of it to me just screams fast though.

well i'm biased also to what i drive. But i'll tell you what i did. Only if you like domestics. But anyway, i got my car at a junk yard for 3200 dollars. Didn't run very well. Over the course of four years i've spent around 9K on it. New motor, supporting drivetrain. And everything else. Puttin' down a good amount of power to smoke everything i've come across so far. Which would be a twin turbo VR4, 12sec. 340 duster, Cammed LS1, 500HP SRT10 RAM, EVO (at the track), SRT4 (also at the track). However mine is definately not a sleeper. BUT with the right exhaust you can make anything sound stock.

EDIT: I'd say with the amount of money you'll have left over from buying the car would give you some good power. And a decent sleeper you'll have. good luck with it.

*cough* BUICK!!! *cough*

Sorry lately i've just been biased because i've came to the conclusion that i'll never buy anything other than a Buick. Not that i dont like other brands.... I'm just obsessed with Buick.

If you're interested in straight perfromance power, I would stick with something American that responds well to mods, maybe a 5.0 or something that you can pick up for really cheap and mod the shit out of it.

-Jayson-
05-01-2005, 11:24 AM
6500 for an 03 cavalier is a rip off. Cavaliers lost all resale value when Gm started giving them away. The most i would pay for an 03 cavalier with 30k miles is 4500.

Also i dont like the 2.2L ecotec engine as much as the Ld9 engine. Having a stock 10:1 compression isnt the most ideal place to start a turbo/blower project.

U want a sleeper, get a grandprix GTP, remove the badges, pulley swap full exhaust, intake, and shift kit, you will be in the 13's.

I concur with the Buick.... get a supercharged regal, thorw some mods on it, and you'll have one hell of a fast granny car. Not only that, but it'll also be pleasent to drive, and most girls like cushy cars.

Get a 93-97 Altima. The KA24DE is a pretty decent engine, they are low 16 sec cars stock, but if you bore it .30" over and get some forged internals, and port and polish the head, you should be running 13's. I got a 94' Altima SE and they look really nice too. and you can pick one up for 2000 and do a SR20DET swao if you have the money.

that is a good point, your average driver doesn't suspect a 1g dsm to be a fast car.

Get a geo metro and drop a 450 in the bitch

Hi,
I would personally recommend a Ford fox chassis vehicle, or something along the lines of an 80's Chevy Malibu.

I have a '78 Mont with a heavily built 302 (2x4 carbs, JE pistons/Scat rods, 10.7:1 compression, big roller cam, etc.) and full manual C6. Very fast, relatively cheap, and very easy to work on. Haven't had to strip but motor makes around 320 hp and car weighs only 2700 lbs all up so 12's look pretty sure. Tons of parts, as they are functionally identical to the 79-93 mustangs. Other models include the LTD, Marquis, and Thunderbird.

My brother is getting an '81 Malibu wagon with a 350 SBC/TH-350 in it. Currently being constructed, but motor has some good upgrades like a [email protected] solid cam, Weiand Team-G intake, 750 DP, and some other bits on the car like a 3000 rpm converter and shift kit. Will definitely turn low 13's for an investment of only $2000.

Both of these models only weigh around 2800 lbs all up. Plus, they are smog era vehicles normally seen rotting in junkyards, therefore make perfect sleepers.

I know you seem to like imports, yes they tend to handle better and definitely get better gas mileage, but consider domestics. For max speed to dollar ratio, they cannot be surpassed. Plus, we all like the sweet rumble of V8's - it makes the blood boil.

Mind you, LS1's have died to my '78. It is total, utter, pants-pissing humiliation for them. I also have a rarely used nitrous kit too, jetted for 150 hp. You ain't lived till you have ridden in a 2700 lbs vehicle with a motor pumping out over 450+ hp. Hallejulah!!!!!!!!

Cheers,
Andy

Grand Prix GTP, Regal GS, or even a Bonneville SSEi (alot of people think it's a GTP though). The least expensive would probably be the GTP though.

Kind of ironic that your last name is "accord", eh chris? Oh! I see you also drive a honda as well.

Good suggestion, but really, your input of "hondas suck" isn't needed. Change your attitude. Here we try to get along somewhat, regardless of whatever someone else may drive. Capiche? Good, no more of that now. And welcome to AF. Glad to have a new member aboard.

Well, no more bashing on Hondas. I don't care if you don't like, nor do most of the members here. Just play along nicely with all the members and you'll fit in fine. Congrats on the new car. I'm fully aware of the potential those 1.8T's have. They are nice cars. So...congrats.

Well, depending on what forum you go to, I'm sure you'll get help. I've received plenty of help from the Honda guys. All I have to do is PM them, or make a simple thread and that's it. I have no problem. If you do, then don't bother coming here saying they suck. You're here for a reason, correct?

Besides, this is the Street Racing forum. Wouldn't expect much help for your car here. So, the VW forums would suite you best.

Well, you know what my suggestion will be, any 1989 and up Turbo Dodge/Chrysler. The Turbo II, III, and IV cars came with a Getrag forged five speed. They have very stong engines. The Turbo I cars are everywhere and can be converted to a Turbo II very easily. You can find a good example of one for anywhere between $1,000 - $4,000 and with $1,500 - $2,000 in mods you can be in the 12s. They are very reliable cars if taken care of. They also get pretty good gas mileage as long as you aren't always in the boost.

You can't say my car isn't a sleeper and I must say that I think it is a damn good looking car.

I might also add that crank walk isn't that common on the 2nd gen cars. It happens but is can be fixed and the reason you hear about it is because, even though there aren't that many cases, it is a PIA if you get it.

Either way I don't really think you can call any DSM a sleeper.
