2001 4runner 4x4 Transmission Fluid

I have a 2001 4x4 4runner and have changed the automatic transmission fluid (Just a drain and refill).
The book says the amount of fluid to add is 2.1 quarts but this will not bring the level to the cold point on the dip stick.

When I drained the fluid, it looked like I took out more then 2.1 qt. I called Toyota dealer thinking the book is incorrect, but they said this is the correct amount.

Anyone have information on this and knows where I can find information. I want to be sure for I do not damage my transmission!!!

Welcome to the AF!

Add whatever amount of fluid is necessary to bring the fluid up to the full point on the dipstick with the engine idling after you have cycled it slowly through all the gears on a level surface.

That was my first thought, but since I purchased the 4runner used I am wondering if it has the correct dip stick installed and why the dealer still says 2.1qt.?

To mush fulid can damage the transmission so I am veryu concerned.

Are you sure you are reading the drain and fill amount for the Automatic tranny amd not the 4WD TRANSFER CASE?? Also Toyota manuals have the amounts in diff. measures for the diff. countries they are sold in. there is Imp. qt. which is diff. from a U.S. qt, and in pints???

Transfer case has no dipstick.

donmiller - It would be very far out on the realm of possibility to have the wrong dipstick both fit and be exchanged. The clip above the dipstick handle base will not fit any dipsticks except those designed like the original. Both diameter and thickness have to be the same or it won't lock in place.

Hello all,

Yes I am sure I am reading the manual correctly and yes I am checking the auto trans. It just really bothers me that I can not find an answer for this question, meaning if it is an error in the manual, Toyota surly would have knowledge and be able to tell me about it.

And the really downside is under filling or overfilling the trans and doing major damage miles down the road. I ended up filling it to where it is in the center of the hot low/High marks. This is after it is warmed up and shifted through all gears.

Thank everyone for your input.

Don

Don't let it bother you. Neither of my Toyotas holds the amount of oil they are supposed to. The numbers in the manual are for approximation only.

Especially due to the fact that it is an automatice transmission and there is still an undetermined amount of fluid left in the torque converter.
