I need to find out how to get the trouble codes from the check engine light, and a key to what the codes mean. Thanks to anyone that can help me

What year, what model...?
Get the Haynes manual ($20) for your car, it has everything you need. If its newer than a 95 it probably has OBDII and its either take it to a shop with a blank check or by a code reader or better a decoder which gives you the codes and sensor readings on a computer, laptop or PDA. Check out:
http://www.scantool.net/
it's as cheap as it gets.
good luck, more info.

It is a 1990, he has to jump the computer connector to get the code.

Check on google for obdI jumper

For the 1990 OBDI, the code readout is activated by shorting Pins A to B on the Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL) connector under the dash below the steering wheel column. Its a black rectangular connector with two rows of 6 sockets. A is on the upper right and B is the second from the right in the upper row.
Short these pins with a short wire or buy the shorting tool at the car parts store for about 3 bucks. Then turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine. The check engine light will blink out any codes is has stored. The first will be a code 12 (Blink, -delay- Blink, Blink) which stands for No Tach Input, since the engine is not running. The code will repeat three times then go to the next code. Copy them down and repost for help.
Good luck, see ya
