Best Shocks?

A few years ago I had KYB gas shocks installed on my 2000 XJ. The first set were the white colored ones with the red lettering. They were supposed to be the best for on the road and for off the road. After the installation the ride was excellent and a noticable improvement over the stock Jeep factory shocks. The only problem with them was that they drove me crazy with the banging-clop-clop noise I kept hearing from the rear shocks whenever I hit the slightest bump in the road. I took the XJ back to the tire shop and they said they have installed those same shock types on older XJs and never had any complaint. I asked them to replace those firmer shocks with some lighter duty silver-gray colored KYB shocks that were meant for the street only and they were smooth and quiet but the ride was not as tight and firm. Are there higher quality on-road off-road shocks that give that nice firm ride without that banging and clopping for stock 2000 Cherokees? Should one just stay with the stock Jeep gas shocks or get street only replacemen gas shocks?

I just put a set of ProComp 3000 on mine in the rear, much more firm ride, will have to see how the front ones do when they get replaced, so far better than stock

For an all around, multi purpose shock, go with the rancho RS9000. They are adjustable in increments of 1 to 5. 1 being softest, 5 being stiffest. There is also the rancho 9000x which has 10 settings. There is a knob on the end of the shock body which controls this.
Or you can opt to mount their in-cab remote system, which controls the shocks from, you guessed it, inside the cab.

Monroe Sensa-Trak. If you're more into on road or just light off road stuff then these are probably sufficient. I just put a set on my '00 XJ and I'm very satisfied.... at the time, Monroe was running a $20 rebate per shock so the pricce was right.
