I have a 98 Ford Contour - just made a second payment and the water pump started leaking. The car overheated on the highway. Engine sounds good (not the head gasket). My question is how hard is it to have the water pump replaced myself ( friend mechanically inclined ). Location of the water pump?

haha why need to ask what motor it is, we all know its a 2.5 duratec, they chew water pumps like crazy
take off the plastic cover on the front of the engine, the water pump is run off a auxillary cam pulley on the right side of the engine, you will see a lot of bolts holding it on but in reality its only 3, look at your new water pump (buy it from ford) to determine which bolts actually bolt it to the engine, remove the belt and tensioner (you can move the tensioner by hand) remove hoses... its a bit of a bitch, the new pump comes with some new hoses but usually I throw 1 of the new ones out, its much easier to use the one that is attached to the engine already, the water pump doesnt like to leave the engine bay when unbolted, its a really tight squeeze, sometimes i bend the coolant pipe that runs around the front of the engine a little for clearance (stick a prybar inside the pipe and give er a little bend towards the front of the car) for reinstallation put the tensioner on after the pump is bolted to the car... I know you will curse trying to take these hoses off its a PITA
hope this helps :)
