Service Engine Soon light

I just bought a 1999 Grand Voyager and it was running fine. When I went to get gas, I forgot to turn off the engine. It seemed ok riding home (I drove about 15 miles at 65 mph - the rpm was at about 2500). However, the next time I started the van, the service engine soon light went on and now it's revving high (it goes over 4000 at 50-55 mph) and I've been driving slower so as not to damage the engine. Is this due to my not shutting the van off while refueling? Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks.

4000rpm is too high for 50-55mph. Is the transmission shifting properly? Sound like you lost overdrive on the tranny.

AutoZone will scan Check Engine codes for free and tell you what is wrong. Usually, leaving your engine running with the gas cap off will trigger a Evaporative Emissions System Failure code if anything. I wouldn't think this would be related to transmission function, but I don't know for sure. In any case, the guys at AutoZone can print out the detailed diagnosis when they scan for the codes.
