93 legacy squealing

my girlfriend's 93 legacy has been squealing for about 3 months. it sounds like a belt to me. it'll do it usually when accelerating....then sometimes if i have it up to about 40-45 mph and let of the gas completly for a few seconds it will stop squealing until i slow down and re-accelerate again.
today her car died....the battery seems to be dead. she got a jump at a nearby gas station and made it home ok....she also said it didnt squeal at all on the way home...which is very odd since it always does it.
I was thinking maybe the alternator belt. though i think that's the serpentine belt?....which isnt broken..and when she turns it over the belt turns. is there any way the belt could be turning around the alternator crank without turning it.
any suggestions or additional information is extremly welcome. i'm hoping it's not the actual alternator since she just had it replaced about 3 or 4 months ago.
thanks much.

If it's squeeling it's probably slipping. If It's slipping it's not charging the battery properly.

ditto to what will2 said.
Come on man, put two and two together... you replaced the alternator 3 months ago, and the belt has been squealing for 3 months...
