Whats up? I've been lifting for a few weeks now every other day at my local gym. Anyway i read online and also talked to a few guys about protein intake per day. I've been using 100% Whey by GNC for awhile now. Anyway i usually have 2 cups of this a day which is 20g per scoop plus a protein bar sometimes which is 35g. So im lookin at 75g, plus chicken, tuna and all the other protein foods i eat. I weigh about 190-195 and im clost to 6ft. I heard you should at least have 1 gram per pound of bodyweight per day. So if this is right im lookin at 190g per day? Should i increase my protein drinks per day? Also will it cause me to gain weight by drinking so much of the shit? Any input helps, Thanks.

You're basically right.

For the average lifter, you're looking at 1 gram/lb of body weight. You probably missed some stuff in your diet though. Things like Milk and cheese and anything that seems insignificant can substantially boost your intake.

Drink lots of milk to supplement (or even mix shakes with milk) and eat lots of meat, fish or nuts, or all of the above. Keep in mind that your body can only absorb about 30-40 grams per sitting, so don't make monster 100 gram shakes, as most of it will get wasted. This is why 3 big meals are not as effective as 6 small meals

the one gram of protein per pound of body weight is a good guideline, however, according to a personal trainer i know, if you eat more than 60 grams of proetin per meal, your body cant handle that much and it just goes to waste. i could talk for hours about workout nutrition and stuff but ill just end it here.

What the other guys said on here is dead on, 1g per lb is about good for an average lifter. And what porsche said is right, you are probably getting more protein in each day than you realize. The milk I drink has 8g of protein for each cup, that mixed with my 20g/scoop of protein shake mix (which I always make a double) makes 56g protein each time I drink it. Two times a day means I am getting 112g protein without solid food.

Also about the weight gain with it, Think in terms of calories. If you are lifting obviously weight gain is great as long as you arent packing on just fat and no muscle. You need about 2800 calories a day to mantain your weight, 3500 less you lose a pound, 3500 more you gain a pound. my protein shake mix has 120 calories/scoop that means that if yours does too your only getting 220 extra calories in for just that, which is good considering the ammount of protein.

If you are worried about getting muscular and fat dont worry about it so much, it happens. Your body needs more calories to build the muscle. If you think your getting too fat throw in some cardio, go for a jog, hop on an eliptical or if you have a punching bag I have a few good workouts for you ;)

Thanks alot guys for the help. I'll break the protein down to so much per meal and i have done some cardio but should really do a little more. And yea if i pack on a few ill be ok as long as i still lift strong.
