VW question: Catalytic converter

Folks, I have a '99 Beetle that has an internal rattling in the catalytic converter according to my mechanic, and needs replacement. He suggested that I call a VW dealer to see what the warranty may be for the part. He thinks the EPA may mandate up to 120k mile replacement warranty for this part, and my bug has just under 100k. I called the local VW dealer parts department and they will not give me a straight answer on this: "Gotta have the shop look at the car first" response.

Does anyone know of vehicle warranty/replacement for the converter?

It's only warranted for 80K miles, sorry.

VW wont make an exception unless your first owner... maybe... and you call and harass vw and cry and say i want my car fixed or i will sue you like other people do because they dont want to pay to get there passat control arms fixed for $1000.
