Now, I have been told that once you go to a full synthetic, you can never go back to a conventional motor oil. Is this true?

I just asked that same question in another forum. And the response I got was.... "have you ever heard of synthetic blend??" So I guess that makes sense...you cab swap back whenever you want. I sent my dad to buy my oil last oil change and he picked up synthetic by mistake....oh well.

Jason is correct you can go back to conventional oils at any time....but why would you want to? i have used royal purple but now use amsoil for about the same cost. nothing bad about royal purple though very good oil too.

The recommended change interval is 10-12,000 miles. You will still need to change the filter every 3-5,000 miles, but just add another quart to the case when you change the filter. In the end, it really isn't more expensive than a conventional oil.

BTW, I changed mine to RP about 1500 miles ago; and the oil still reads clear on the dipstick. I was using Castrol Full Synthetic previously, but as it turns out, it really isn't a "full synthetic" oil. It is basically a conventional oil refined further. Yes, it is better than standard 5W30 oil, but not a true synthetic like RP. I have also noticed a .5 MPG increase since the change, and a noticeable smoothness throughout the RPM range. I love the stuff.

So when you change the filter alone, don't you wind up getting oil every where, or is there a way to stop oil from pouring out of the filter outlet?

You lose roughly 1 quart. Yes, some does pour out around the filter, but the majority (5 quarts) is still in the case beneath it. No different from removing the filter like you normally would.

I switched my truck over to Royal Purple 2 days ago. I always use the 87 octane gas the owner's manual suggests, but unless i use a higher octane, I would always get the octane (valve) rattle under medium to hard acceleration. After having the oil in the truck for 2 days, I have noticed that about 98% of the rattle is gone under medium to hard acceleration and I am still using regular 87 octane gas.
