Overdrive

My Idea Of Overdrive Is That When You Are Highway Driving You Can Hit The Button And The Revs Should Drop. Is There A General Speed You Can Do This. Mine When Going About 100km When You Hit O/d The Revs Go Up. Also Will Changing To The Atf+4 Help With Shifting Problems From 2nd To 3rd When -20 Degrees Out. I Just Bought The Truck 96 Ram 1500/318 And Have Not Changed Or Do Not Know When The Last Change Of Fluid Was. It Looks Clean And There Is No Smell.

your rpms should never go up somethings not right od is slipping or the TC not locking up I would have it checked. how much does it change by the way. The shifting from 2-3 when cold is a issue with the inner sealing ring on the direct clutch. the grove for the seal is cut to deep so the seal over time shrinks and loses its sealing ability. this problem gets better when the transmission warms up most of the time.

Changes About 500rpm, Minimal But Noticeable...what Is Tc?

Torque converter clutch sounds like the problem to me with only a 500 rpm change. TC is torque converter. how late of a shift is the 2-3?

ATF+3 only. DO NOT use anything else.

Well if your truck is in o/d, when you press the overdrive button it takes it out of top gear (5th) into 4th gear and therefore your revs will go up... this is normal. If however o/d is off and you press the button the truck should go into o/d (granted your moving fast enough) and the rpms will then drop.

That's false. Pushing the button will take it out of overdrive and into third gear. His transmission is an automatic four speed eh.

Thanx all...I took a closer look at the button and figured out is says O/D OFF.......Spoke to my mechanic (brother lol) and he confirmed. It is a 3 speed with Automatic O/D and when you hit the button the O/D comes off therfore increasing the revs

Bleeddodge: I was reading a service bullitin in here about the ATF+4. Dodge apparently has improved the fluid. They recommmend the switch ,even as a top up procedure...Dont ask me where but it was,but it was in one of the threads in here....I have read alot of stuff since becoming a member and I gotta tell ya this site is awesome. I picked up the truck for 2000 CDN and I love it. If I can find all the fixes for stuff in here then a whole lot of cash can be saved. PS Thanx for ur input

DISCUSSION:

A new transmission fluid (ATF+4(R) - Type 9602) has been developed and is being used as factory fill for all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions. Until now, vehicles originally filled with ATF+2 or ATF+3 were to be serviced with ATF+3. Effective immediately, it is recommended that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions except for 1999 and earlier minivans be serviced with ATF+4(R). ATF+3 should continue to be used for 1999 and earlier minivans because of the potential for torque converter shudder during break in. For all other applications the ATF+4(R) fluid offers significant benefits as outlined below.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) MUST ALWAYS BE USED IN VEHICLES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY FILLED WITH ATF+4(R).

NOTE :SERVICE INTERVALS DO NOT CHANGE. THE SERVICE INTERVAL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR A GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE FOLLOWED.

FLUID COLOR

Mopar ATF+4(R) is a World Class Fluid having exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4°R is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not support a fluid change.
