You can't keep em forever

Having taken a week off work, I suppose I just had to make a start on my stockpile.

Time to rollout my Tamiya Toyota Sard Supra.

So far, it's had 2 coats of Halfords' White Plastic Primer, a rub-down and 2 coats of Halfords' White Appliance Gloss.

The wheels (one shown) were masked using many layers of Tamiya masking tape and then airbrushed with a mix of Tamiya Clear Blue/Smoke.

Once dried, the rivets on the rim were returned to their original chrome look by carfully rubbing the paint off with a cocktail stick.

Before it's done, I'll give the rims a coat of clear just to be sure that nothing else rubs any more paint off them...

The kit comes with many decals for the red stripes. I'm replacing as many as I dare with red from my airbrush. (as seen on the front lip)

Brave or Stupid? You tell me...

Great looking kit....when i built it i used all the decals, so i dont know if i'm stupid or brave.
Watch the alinement(spelling?) of the front wheels, as i had trouble with the front wheels having all the wrong angles. They sloped the wrong way and was very noticeable when finished.

Great job on the wheels... Looks hot so far! :D

Nice work on the wheels.

As for the red, I think that using the airbrush is a good idea aslong as the colour matches the red of the rest of the decals.

I did a similar thing for my Clarion GTR as some of the decals got ruined so I hand painted the rest of the pinkish colour.

I've checked by eye, that the colours match and they seem pretty close. I may end up changing my mind and going with a slightly darker shade (XF-7, with a clear topcoat).

A friend got into building once he saw that I'd started, and his first (and last) project was the Pennzoil Skyline. I wanted to build that one myself, too - but his model is sat on my fire-surround in amongst my small collection.

This is why I chose the newer Loctite version. (So that I could build the same model without being a labelled as a copycat!)

I started that one over 4 months ago and (as mentioned in another recent post) I've just picked up the nerve to continue it after an awkward rescue from a dire paintjob...

Looks like I might be doing the Supra and Skyline as a dual-project - if not, the skyline comes next (as it's already about 50% complete).

Thats looking nice, i thinks its a good idea to use the airbrush to eliminate some of the decals.

Ive been using halfords appliance white for some time on race and rally cars but just recently i'm starting to think that its too bright! Whats your opinion???

IMHO, I feel that Halfords' other "Whites" are a bit "Yellow" by comparison. I quite like the fact that it's almost "Washing Powder" White. Maybe they added some "Brilliant Blue" in there somewhere...

Seriously though, I like my cars to be "W-H-I-T-E". And Halfords Appliance White fits the bill just nicely.

...Point taken, though - in essence, I agree - but I still prefer it over the others I've considered.

Hmmm, yeah, i dont think im going to stop using it - hell i've still got three cans of the stuff to use up!... I once overheard a conversation between 2 guys at a model show who said that when your painting models, u should use colours a slight shade lighter. I've never heard that mentioned or talked of before, i wonder how true it is???

This is kind of out of the blue but can i use gray tamiya primer if im going to spray it with a light color like white?

I noticed the wheels rims are black. I'm gonna have to look at the instructions again - the box top illustration shows what look like anodized blue rims, which is why I did mine as they are. (Or have you been using other references/artistic license?)...

...and I'm not looking forward to those awkward looking, thin Red decals in front of the headlamps!!!

BTW, Do you take your photos with a Digicam or Film? I noticed that you always seem to get your DOF just spot on!

Oh! Yes! Sorry...

If you use a darker primer than the topcoat, you'll Darken the final colour.

I'd tend to use White primer for Whites, Bright Reds, Yellows and Light Blues etc.

Use Grey (sorry, Gray) for Silvers, Blacks and darker colours (sorry, colors). OK I'll stop this, now!

If you use a "Red Lead" type primer instead of a White one under a Red topcoat and it'll be noticeably darker...

See? Now you know why I was confused...

What if...

What if I scan in the decals, print them out 1:1 on paper, then use some of my Masking Friskett to cut out inverted masks for any of the red body-stripes?

Do you think I could replace *ALL* the red decals with an airbrush?

Is it *realistically* feasable?? It'd be *really good* practice!!!

Should I try it, and risk ruining what has the potential to be a fantastic kit?

...Or am I just displaying the first signs of PolyPsychosis???
(Did I just invent a new disease?)

This was one of the first models i done and i think you are right about the rims being anodized. I painted them in a Navy blue as i thought that would be close enough !!! :p :p ...beginners !!!!
I just use the digital camera from work....just aim and click :D ...with that flower thingy on in the display.

Its certainly possible!!! The area u need to paint is relatively simple in shape but from what i can see, the tricky areas are going to be around the headlights as u said and over the bonnet vents.

I did a similar thing on my megane, which has been abandoned after i screwed up the decals on one side. Its waiting to be stripped and started again.
