Ring & Pinion

My maro has a 4.11 rear end in it, 4 speed munice m22 - runs about 55-60 at 4000 rpms (don't know for certain speedo cable has kink in it).

Question: I want to drive this thing some, and need to get more top end out of it. 6 speed is out of my price range for the time being, what would be a decent rear end ration to go with: 3.73's, 3.55's or something else.

I don't want to go no 200 mph... I just want to hit 70 - 90 without going deaf, broke or blowing up my engine.

3.73 or 3.42 are all around so you still get pretty good low end and get better top end

3.42 is prolly one of the greatest street and strip gears.

well, given that you have a four speed manual, and your tallest gear is a 1:1 ratio if i remember correctly, i would suggest going as low as 3.23 gears on your setup.

I think 3.42's would suit you just fine for all around driving.

Throw a pair of Huffy 21-Speed Mountain Bike gears inside it and call it a day.

One question though: Would I be dogging out my maro if I stuck 3.42's in there? I mean obviously it's not going to be the same as 4.11's, prolly far from it, but I'm not going to be whipped by these mustang fags and fart pipes left and right am I? (If so I'll go put a 2.8l - 6 in there, paint it pink, and make it be the limp wristed mary i've made it.)

Well do to the over drive of the other cars your at a disadvantage gears wise threw the tranny and while 3.55 mustang don't really have much at all a advantage over 3.42's you will definetly lose some but your not going to be dead in the water. Its a all around good gear for performance/economy IMO. I have 3.73's in my car and I didn't notice that much of a fuel economy problem versus my 3.23's I had but then again I do notice the difference on highway big time(as in RPM's).

Is it hard to install? Any special tools needed to do this, or should I pay a mechanic. I hope not, because I hate paying mechanics, they always wind up charging double their original quote.

If i remember you have a 454 in the camaro? I ran 3:55s in my 454 Nova until the axles bent and they were pretty decent. More of a highway gear "mid-range" gear though, with decent off the line performance. I liked them alot, but I was a tad bit disappointed with the off the line "umph". I'm going with 3.73's in the new 12 bolt. I realize you having a 4-speed makes it kind of different, but I hope this little comparison helps.
