oil pressure guage

my oil pressure guage bottoms out every once in a while, usually while im coming to a stop. during idle the pressure reads fine (about 30 psi on a 60 psi guage). the car runs fine. but idles a little low (which i think is completly different problem). when the guage bottoms out it just goes straight down, not gradually. it just falls in a split second, it stays at 0 for about 1-2 seconds and quickly goes back up.
what do yall think. i thought maybe lose wiring sumwhere. if so where should a guy look? thanks for all help.

its a 89, 305 w/ 117K. and no other problems really. the 32 (egr) code is constantly coming up, but i didnt think that would make any difference. and i get a little puff of smoke on start up. im guessing just the valve seats/guides.

assuming the oil level is correct, just sounds like a issue with the wiring for the sending unit.

a little update:
hooked up a external oil pressure guage. only to find out that the guage in the dash is right-on.
so now, what are my options, temporarily? ive been thinkin about doin a engine swap later. but for now to keep this thing runnin, is there some kind of additive i can put in my oil to help pressure(if the problem is in the bearings)? or is a high volume oil pump the best fix for now? or something else? thanks in advance.

rut ro, sounds like the pump took a dump. Maybe a clogged pick up?
No lifter chatter, just a little puff at startup? Can't really help ya out with a 'temporary fix' here. I would say a new pump, and, since you're there definately new bearings. But I know if it were me I'd be po'd if it ended up not being. You're gonna have to investigate it further.

'rut ro' is right. but yeah, theres no chatter. no clankin, bangin, nothin. so im hopin a pump is all it is.
how safe is this to drive while i can find time to do a pump swap? because it will hold pressure usually, about 80% of the time its ok.
so you guys know any tricks to getting the oil pan off a 3rd gen w/o takin apart the exhaust like the manual says?

well i put the car on jackstands, started the whole 'replace-your-oil-pump' project. i didnt realize how hard those 16 yr old exhaust bolts were gonna be to get off. after about a can of pj blaster, several stripped nuts, and a hacksaw they're comin off, only to have new shiny ones put back on the rusty pipes. can i get any advice in this process? not just on the exhaust. i'm gonna tear into it some more tomorrow evening. thanks.

Support the front of the engine, hoist if possible. Remove the engine mount bolts, remove dist cap if you have the large coil in cap set up. raise the front of the engine. Unbolt the pan (you may have to rotate the engine by hand to get the front counter weight to clear the front lip of the pan)
Remove the old pump, have the new pick up screen tack welded to the new pump in the proper place. The pump drive rod is going to come out with the old pump and is held to it with a plastic coupler which may be broken...get a metal one. Prime the new pump, put the drive rod on it and rotate itto the right position (look up at dist shaft for orientation) and install the pump. Wash out the oil pan throughly, remove all of the old gasket and clean the gasket rails. Install the new gasket with permatex hi-tack on both sides. At the front seal install it with permatex ultra black at the corners, the same with the rear seal. Install the pan, lower the engine, hook the engine mounts back up, hook up exhaust, install dist cap (if removed), fill with oil, fire it up and look for leaks.
