Internet Sharing

I have a crossover cable, and I have 2 comps networked (one, comp1, 1.2ghz AMD Athlon, Windows ME, the other, comp2, Pentium 200mhz, win95)
I want to share my cable connection on comp1 with comp2. But it doesn't work. The windows ME internet connection sharing protocol didn't work. The windowsME help was kinda confusing, and I was leaving soon, so didn't try it. But now I have a week to figure out what to do.

SO, does anyone know some good internet-sharing software out there that is compatable with these 2 different OS's?

just get yourself a little lynksys router then just run cables from the router to the 2 computers.

I would rather slug it out with the Windows help then spend $100 on a router. So I guess I will keep looking for a free solution:)

Mom hates those (her computer, and she doesn't want anything other than WinME) Oh well. I get to try and network them again Friday;)

i suggested 98 SE because it's a good system for everything ! but ofcourse NT is better in ONLY networks ! and 2000 is much better ! but forget about the games ! :D

Windows ME ICS sucks ass. Causes all sorts of problems. Get Win2K or XP and use that built in connection sharing. It kicks ass.

What version of windows dosn't have a security bug. :D

Getting two differnt versions of windows to network is always hard.
Iv only ever done it between win98 and 95.
And even then it was rather unstable.

I got her to let me install XP (I kinda like it now, I admit, I finally caved:eek: ) So we will see how that works. (And the ME help said that windows was missing a critical file, which it wouldn't let me install from the CD, which meant a re-install. It also told me to run IPCONFIG on my bros comp, which doesn't have this. Oh well. I will get it this weekend or one of the computers will die!!!!!:D (I hate to lose:rolleyes: )

you have to run ipconfig from the ms dos prompt

Start-Run-cmd

And networking windows machines of different versions is easy, as long as they are all setup on the same subnet and workgroup

We use a NetGear wireless DSL/Cable router Model MR314 - works great. It connect a PC on Win98 and a laptop on XP

Donno if you've resolved the situation or not, but have you run the ME Networking setup disk on the computer with 95? Its the disk you can make through the ME Networking Wizard.

My old room mate and I networked a computer with 95 and one with ME. The one with ME had two network cards and a cable modem, I was sharing internet with it. It took us for ever to get it to work, but it finaly did :D

I now have winXP pro and win98SE, and I used the Winxp network wizrd, adn nothing. Actually, worse, as the 2 comps cant even share files (I think because I can't install certain protocol, like netbieu of winxp)
And its really irking me, I worked on it for a few hours now.

If anyone has any suggestions for this, let me know.

Ok, under network properties, what do you have installed? Like what adapters, protocols and such?

I have netbieu, ipx/spx compatible, adn TCP/Ip on win98 computer. On winxp, I have NWLink netBIOS, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol, TCP/IP, and Network monitor driver (I also have, of course, Client for Microsoft networks and file and printer sharing on)

Sometimes, from win98, I can see my moms comp, but when I click on it, it says it is not accesible. It is fairly driving me nuts:mad:

If anyone has ANY ideas as to what they did, I would appreciate them. Any little tid-bit would help:help:

That sounds exactialy like what me and my roomie had happening, accept at one point, we could share internet, see each other, but when we tried to browse "Network is not Accesible) :finger:

WEll, it still isn't working. I manually defined IP addresses (192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2) and gateways (192.168.10.20). No network, and a ping test from the client didn't work (I didn't try from host, couldn't find dos at the time, know where it is now)

BUT when I changed the clients IP to the same as the host, I tried logging on, and it said that another computer on the network already had the IP, so it is kinda working. This gave me hope, but also pissed me off.

Next weekend I will try putting netBIEU on XP, and try it then. Maybe I'll even call tech support (yes, desperation is setting in).
