99 Tauras Transmission

I was driving home last night on the Freeway. I had my cruise set at 84 mph. Suddenly my engine rpm's increased without an increase in speed. (Like pushing in a clutch if you have cruise control set) I turned off the cruise and stepped on the gas.The engine revved up but the car didn't accelerate. I pulled to the side of the freeway and tried to shift into any other gear. Nothing happened. My car is automatic but it acts like a standard transmission with the clutch gone! The only thing that seems to work is Park. I can't push the car forward in Park but I can in any other gear. SUGGESTIONS?

Sounds like your tranny is toast. I had this happen to me on my old Ford Probe. The converter went bad and ground itself up in a matter of a a 30min drive. I checked the fluid two days prior ( I was checking all the fliuds) and was nice and red. Was driving to work two days later and started doing exactly what yours is doing. I was ablt to get to work, and the fluid was a nice Metalic Grey. Tranny only had 42kmi on it.
