Just relax, get the gear pattern down & operating the clutch & shifter.
The more you drive, the easier it will become.
Good luck & enjoy the ride \ drive.
Thats cool of your friend to let you drive.

he's let me try shifting a few times while driving but that's it. i'm getting an eclipse spyder gst next year so i wanted to know how to drive stick before i got my own car as a stick and wouldn't be able to enjoy it the day i got it. how long does it typically take until u get fairly competent at driving stick?

You will have it down [ the basics ] in about a half hour or so of driving the car.
Cars today the shifting is fairly easy.
In general cars shift easier than trucks for the most part.
Car mfgr. take in consideration that more women are driving sticks these days & in most sport cars sticks are an option.
Best way to learn the basics is in a empty parking lot or a street that is not too busy.
Practice downshifting coming up to stops, shifting going up hills ....
It takes a little time ,but the more you drive, the better driver \ shifter you will become.
Keep me posted on the outcome & good luck in getting your desired car.
