2000 Muffler on '99 Rodeo?

Just got back from Midas where I went to have my muffler replaced. The OEM muffler was rusted out about 1/4" beyond where the pipe exits on the back. It's been this way for about the last 10K miles. It wasn't noisy or anything but without being attached to anything, the tailpipe was banging around which was annoying.

Rather than just patch things up, I decided to do the 'right' thing and replace the muffler. I did a lot of calling around and couldn't find a 'replacement' muffler for anything newer than a '97 (the last year of the 1st generation Rodeos). I knew Midas would be expensive but when I called them, they said they had what I needed so I went there.

Turns out that the muffler they had listed for a '99 wouldn't work on my '99. The inlet and outlet were 'reversed'. The inlet had a short curved pipe with a flange on the outboard side and the outlet had a short pipe on the inboard side. What I needed was a short pipe on the inboard side on the front and a short pipe with a flange on the outboard side on the back. I realize a picture would be worth a thousand words here. If it wasn't pouring down rain, I would consider taking a picture.

Midas said they ran the VIN on my Rodeo and said it was a late 99 and because of this, it had a 3.5L engine with the 2000 exhaust. Well, I'm pretty sure I've got a 3.2L but I couldn't really argue with the exhaust part. They didn't have a muffler for a 2000 and said they couldn't get one except from the dealer.

What they wound up doing was cutting the short pipe and flange off the inlet end and welding it on the back side. Then the just flipped it over and installed it 'backwards'. It all seemed to fit once they swapped the ends. Total cost was $190 but I have a lifetime warranty on the muffler.

So to summarize:

- Very disappointed in only getting 80-85K out of the OEM muffler which was otherwise in good shape besides the pipe rusting off in the vicinity of the weld.

- Weird that Isuzu would start using the 2000 exhaust system before that model year started. But then, I used to build ranges at GE and we did some unusual things when parts got tight...

- Those of you with late '99 Rodeos and Troopers beware. You may have some '00 parts on your truck.

Anybody else have any wacky muffler stories?

I went to Middas a few months ago because my "Y" pipe had a leak at the bend. My mechanic wanted $325 to fix it with a new "Y" pipe. I went to Middas because I though it would be cheaper. They charged me $190 to cut out the bad part and put in a patch. I agreed to it and was regretting it immediately. I should have fixed it the correct way. I can not see this lasting for more than a year.

Also they said you had the 3.5, I didn't think they were available in 1999. I may be wrong, but I thought these engines were a 2004 only Rodeo engine.

I bought a 98 3.2L with 85k miles on it. There was some hole in the muffler so Id have a whistling sound when I accelerated. I went to a local muffler shop and paid $160 and got a Flowmaster 50 series installed.
