Stalling & Dying while Driving

My 1995 Olds 88 has been pretty good, but recently it's started to stall and die when I drive it. I can drive it for a good chunk of a day without a problem, but at some point it will suddenly stall and die. The car will then be unable to start (it won't turn over), but if I leave it alone for a few minutes it will usually start back up.

I've done a little research, and I've been told that the early 90's 88 fuel pumps tend to get clogged with debris -- does this sound like a likely scenario? The problem I have is that the car won't die on a regular basis, and my mechanic says he can't do anything unless the car dies for him so he can determine the problem. My Olds has 110,000 miles on it, and everything else SEEMS to be okay (just replaced the computer a year ago, to fix some electrical problems). The car runs fine when it does run... but it has a tendancy to stall and die.

I could think of at least 10 seperate things that could cause that.

Does it crank or try to crank when it dies? that would narrow it down a little.

Does humidity affect it?

or temperature?

When it dies, it just dies suddenly. When I try to start it back up, it does everything -but- "kick over"...

Heat and humidity haven't changed radically in the past week, and this problem has been occurring each day.
