Lost my Power

86 Bronco full size. I pulled into a parking space and it died as soon as I braked. Now there is no power at all in the car (no lights, no turning over, etc) and I have replace the battery, battery cables, and solenoid. Any ideas for this one? thanks

That's (oddly enough) a sign of BIG problems. Did your engine overheat? (Look for head-related problems.) The theory is that the engine uses so much power just driving, and it uses more when braking. (Since the brake power also comes from the engine.) When your engine is in poor shape, it can't handle the stress of running, and braking.

Check the oil for moisture, and the coolant for oil. Also check the intake manifold for leaks on top, and the exhaust manifolds for leaks below. Checking the water pump can't hurt, and make sure your belt is in good condition. (Also the belt tensioner, while you're at it-take the belt off and see how the tensioner moves in it's range. It takes a 5/8" socket, same as the spark plugs.) Since this is turning into a real list, might as well check your vacuum hoses for cracks, missing, and disconnects...(yeah, all Fifty Billion vacuum hoses....)

Since you're leaning towards an electrical problem, look at the fusible link(s) on the negative battery lead. These can go bad. Disconnect, and look for green-ish gunk on the inside. There are also numerous grounding points on the vehicle, look for frayed braided wires....(also greenish gunk on them.) Advance Auto Parts lists vehicle recalls based on Make/Model. My '88 had one on the ignition switch (which I had already replaced....) That's about all I can think of short of replacing the CPU (or PCM, as they call it.)

(OOPS, forgot to say-Go ahead and check the connections for everything you replaced. One time, I didn't get a bolt so tight, and it did cause trouble! ;) and you should also check the alternator.)
