Rebuild or Swap?

I have a '84 K-10 silverado with a California emmission 350, it's kinda tired and don't know if i should go through the trouble of rebuilding it or just spending the $5000 and dumping in a crate 383. What do you guys think?

Sounds like you're in California like me. My experience has been that used blocks are "seasoned" and thus more stable than new, "green" blocks.

My installer shop (40 years in business) recommended Team C Performance of Bellflower for a 383 stroker. Engine price was $2700 with World iron heads, Crane RV cam, Cloyes, Melling, all quality parts. It's smooth and powerful!

If you insist on a new long block, Smeding Performance of Sacramento is one of the best but you'll pay about $4000.

Actually I'm located in Connecticut, my father bought the truck used back in '86, the original owner drove it here from Califonia and sold it. I'm working to get the truck back up and running right, (20 years outside in New England weather hasn't done it justice). It only has 105,000 on the motor but the carb is shot to hell (it was replaced and the mechanic put settings for a non-cali 305 on the carb-- this is a common occurance due to the fact you could only get a 350 in california that year, but after some tweaking by myself i got it to run), also one of the cylinders doesn't seem to be firing. The tranny just went about 2 weeks ago, so thats one more thing that needs fixing or replacing. And the body needs to have all the rust taken care of. I'm probably going to just dump in a new 350/383, TH-700R4 and transfer case, unless its cheaper to rebuild what I already have. How well would you guys rate the GM crate motors and TCI trannies?

Not sure about the trannies but GM Crate engines are fantastic. You will never run out of power. I'd take sub006's advice and get a 383. For only 2700, it's a steal. I've heard 383s have TONS of grunt and will last forever.

Yes, the GM crate engines are high quality. Some dealers are very aggressive in discounting (see DRIVE magazine ads or online).

The 700R4 is a good performing unit with a reputation for fragility. There are several tweaks such as using more/thinner clutch discs to improe the situation. Best thing you can do is use Redline D4 ATF 100% from the initial fill.

I would tend to go with a local rebuilder of good reputation (look for ATRA national reciprocal warranty coverage) rather than a mailorder source. If something goes wrong you can tow the vehicle in instead of removing and shipping the trans!

Also be sure to install a quality mini-radiator type oil cooler. The factory one that came with my Suburban's HD towing package was simply a pipe that ran through the hot water in the engine radiator!
