i have a "slight sweat" on the underside of my oil pan. its not dripping, its just barely barely leaking i think whenever i really hit it hard.

I burn 1 qt. at about 1000 miles. Usually do about 65 with it. That's at 192,000 on stock engine that was really beat up by the last owner. Think that's bad? When I was driving my MR2 home, I used up 2+ qts of oil in 600 miles. As soon as I got home I started ripping the engine out for a rebuild.

That reminds me... I was going to do the oil pan gasket but it really seemed unnecessary (if I never even messed with it I probably woudn't have broke that header bolt... however, removing the 02 sensor and reinserting has gotten it to work more efficiently)... not even a sweat, more like corrosion or something... weird.

I burn around 1/2 qt to 1 qt per 1000miles. This on 204K original miles. I would say it happens a lot more often when I get on the gas hard (everytime I drive). :lol2:

I have to agree with 91civichatch2571, i also have a recent rebuild and run royal purple and see no burning what such ever. But my old dx was hell on oil! but then again my lead foot was hell on that 212k motor.

Honda: No
Mazda: Yes
I would do something if my Civic burned oil, but I could care less about my beater. Maybe half a liter between oil changes.

all engines burn SOME oil...it just depends on how much and if you can meaure it as a quart a month.

Nissan - No never had to add any
Honda - Yep, the stock d15 uses a quart a week!
But that motor is gone now and my B18 is going in this week!

well my dad went about ~6k miles before losing a quart(found out during oil change); 96 Toyota T100, my moms van rarely loses oil(probally just a few fl. oz in ~3000miles; 93 Nissan Quest GXE), and my CRX DX burns about half a quart in about 1500 miles(has just over 230k miles)

I go through a quart every 1000-1500 miles depending on how hard i drive in that time. But workin on rebuilding my spare ZC.

You should ask, how many of us don't? That will be a smaller list.

i burn about a quart a month, perhaps a quart and a half. put it this way, i usually end up having to ad at LEAST a quart, and sometimes 2 quarts between oil changes.
under my car i can see that there's oil dripping from... you name it, it leaks. obvious leakage from oil pan gasket, but haven't read up on how to get at it to fix it.
suspected leakage from tranny.... i'm hoping it's just dripping ONTO the tranny... i'll check the thing eventually, but i haven't had any problems shifting and i changed my tranny oil middle of last year, so i should be fine.
(i've aquired propper tubing and syringes for which to do a much easier oil change on my tranny. i just may get at it and change it again for good measure this year.)

Could be your dizzy o-ring leaking oil onto your tranny. I had that problem and it got messy...

I used to use a heavier oil & additive to control the oil burning. Now i went back down to a lighter weight and i'm burning like mad. Maybe one quart per week.
I read in another forum where a guy reduced his oil burning with an engine 'flush' type cleaner, auto rx.
This auto rx has greatly helped my motor perform better. But it still burns oil. Runs great, but burns. So i'll try a new PCV valve. Maybe i'll try sythetic also.
I don't want to rebuild the engine.
Anyone have any suggestions?

burn 1/4 - 1/2 a quart every 1000 miles. 262k original miles. mechanic says its the oil pan gasket. I would change it myself but my dad says no.

About a quart every 3000 miles, sometimes more depending on how fast I go, usually go over 80 all the time. Car is an 88 wagovan with just over 202,000 miles on it.

Does anyone know of a way to reducle oil burning? New PCV valve?
Does 'blow by' usually happen in one spot on 4rthgenerations? Is there one repair that usually fixes this?
I can switch back to 15W from 5w but i would imagine this would reduce MPG; maybe even slow down the motor.
I read somewhere that Lucas UCL might help with blow by.
The engine runs very good except for the oil burning. Do I need a new one? Do i need a rebuild?
I already changed the rings around the spark plugs that came with the the valve cover gasket.
Also, I've had EXCELLENT resultS with Auto Rx and i strongly recomend this product. (It's similar to a 'Gumout' or 'Gunk' type flush)
Suggestions welcome.

I think switchinng to sythetic would reduce oil burning. But considering I'm loosing almost one quart every 400 miles would that just be throwing money away?

You could try running the 5w with an oil additive too. I dont know if you tried that yet. Mine used to burn oil more than yours so when i changed it last i put in the 5w30 and an additive that is supposed to help sealk around the rings and i have only burned about 5mm down from the full mark on the dipstick in 2,000 miles. I cant tell if the MPG went down because it jumps all over on everytank.

Thanks CPolaris,
What kind of additive did you use? Restore? Lucas? Was it super thick like Motor Honey?
I'm dreading the idea of having to pay for rebuild of a motor that runs wonderfully except for a little oil burning. Compression is fine.

The stuff that i used came from napa, i think the brand was resolute and the stuff was called ringseal. Yeah it was real thick and hard to get out of the bottle. Its saved me money from not needing to buy more oil all the time.
