I Just bought a '89 firebird for 1000. got it home and it was perfect. I drove to the end of my driveway, and the 5 speed won't shift into 5th or reverse. This may be the push i need to put in an automatic with a manual valve body. Should i try to salvage the tranny, or will it keep doing this to me?

Could be a linkage problem, if you hear a grinding when you try to shift into those gears, the teeth might not have enough pressure to go into the holes. Not sure, just a guess from taking my tranny out over the last two weeks.

nothing grinds, the shifter just won't move over to the right half of my gear selection. = 5th and reverse

also the clutch seems really weak to push in. That can't be any good either

Maybe your clutch is just wore out and you cant push it in enough to shift to 5th and reverse

My dad looked at it yesterday, and it;s got a hydraulic clutch and a benq something tranny. i think that is what he said. Anyway, the tranny dosen't have linkage, it's a top loader.
