Someone told me today that it was common for the escorts to have the rear springs (the last coil) to crack. However where they crack they still are held in place. Anyone know about that?

yeah it is common. I had to rplae mine and when I took them out it was like that. both rear cracked from either rust or wear, but still the paint on them or some parts still strong enough, kinda held them in place, or at least together, but when I took them out the bottom part just hung there. but its very common for them to break. hell if you have ones that broek I got some eibach springs that are a little firmer, and lower the car 1 inch. dont have alot of miles on them, still good. I loved the difference when I got these put in.

I just found out I need to replace both rear springs in mine. Any advice or e-links would be appreciated as I am not familiar with this process.

Thanks!

I just replaced all the struts, and springs in my Tempo. They have the same problem, and you'll rarely see 1 sitting level because of it.

Change to Progressive springs, they cost a little more but last longer

When replacing the struts/coils'
Check the the "cup" or "seat" that the top of the coil rides in.

I had a clunking noise, looked at the rear coils and they were shot.
Soooo, I replaced the struts/coils and thought all wolud be good.

2 minutes out of the drive the clunking was back-investigating futher found the above mentioned problem. replaced those, THEN all was good.

I had to change the coils on my '97 Escort last fall. I didn't even know they were both cracked until the mechanic switching my summer tires showed them to me. I had them replaced. Cost about $40 (canadian) each plus 1.5 hrs of work.

Does anyone know how long the aftermarket springs last? I've really been considering a set of Eibach's for my '90 Escort, but I'm wondering if they'll hold up to 100k miles.

The stock springs in my Topaz lasted 180k miles.

Just don't overload the car too often and by too much and you should be fine

My '95 has 115k and I just learned that my springs are bad. Car has never really done alot of hauling or heavy loads. I am hoping to do them myself as I was quoted $715 to have them done at a shop!!!

OUCH!
I just had my springs, and struts all replaced, along with new front bearings and new rotors for $1000 canadian.
Every part was a preimum part as well, thinking that they would last longer
