Interesting power Window problem

Hey guys.

First time in these forums as a member and just wanna say hi and give my 'interesting' power window problem.
I have a 2 door grand am SE and the driver side power window started acting up. When i press the button to put the window down automatically it won't stop if i press up on the switch, the windows stops but after releasing the button it keeps going. I have to turn off the ignition and then turn it back on the let the window go back up. Could this be a regulator/motor issue.. or a simple stuck button in the switch ?

thanks in advance for any advice.

Matt

Matt,

Welcome to the Forum...it sounds to me like you have a problem with the switch itself. The driver side window has the express down, but you should be able to stop the window from going down by pushing the switch to the up position to stop it from going down. It seems that the switch is hanging up in the express down mode. You may want to find a salvage yard and get a switch to replace your's with and see if the window operates properly. This should be a cheaper way to start narrowing down the cause of the problem and with any luck I'll be right and you will not need to go any further.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks Dan.

I can pay off the car but not repairs at the moment, so hopefully (knock on wood) it's just a switch and that's an extreamly easy fix.
Now I have a new question while i think about it. at highway speeds, 100 km - 120+ kms i get a strng vibration in the stearing and through out the car. Whos had the same problem and what are some of my options with this.

Thanks alot.

That problem sounds like it may be a simple fix...it is most likely that your wheels are out of balance, Take you car to a tire shop and have them balance the wheels shouldn't be too expensive at all. The other thing that it could be would be the rotors being out of round however if this wrer the case you would feel a pulsation through the brake pedal. If this is the case this can be a little more expensive but still not too bad cost wise.
I have a hunch that it is the frist option being the out of balance situation since it is doing the shakes at a certian speed range.

Hope this helps out, with any luck both of your fixes will be the simple and least expensive.

Good luck,
Dan

Ensure your tire air pressure is equal, all four tires, a tire uner-inflated by only a few lb.'s can cause the vibration at upper end speeds.

Well I took matters into my own hands. I removed the switch unit for the power window.. a unit which includes 'two switches', at my dealership is 120 bucks +Tax, and the wrecking yards don't have em. I opened up the plastic housing so that the circuit board is exposed, I've had alot of experience with electronics so I did what i've learned in the past few years... strengthen the physical connection between the circuit board and the contacts for the controls (little peices of copper twisted to lock the circuit board in place, I've leaened from before thoes types of connection are extreamly weak and flakey). I solderd the connections in place ensuring that they made a solid connection with the circuit board. Problem solved, window works better then before. Now i just hope it stays that way till the motor dies. :bigthumb:

you guys were a great help though, made narrowing down the problematic part much much easier.

Would you guys happen to know if people have been having issues with inaccurate fule guages ?

thanks alot

As for the fuel guage problems, it's funny you should ask that just in the last couple of days there have been some threads about fuel milage which have lead to guage issues. You might want to check them out and throw in your two cents, who knows there may be some type of fix out there.
