check engine light, and code

the truck is a 99 1500 4x4, w/ 5.9, and auto trans. the check engine light came on last week, was on for about two days, then went off. this weekend I took it to autozone and had it checked for codes.
it had a p0443 ( I think that's the correct number, I lost the paper that I wrote it on) anyway, the guy said that it was the "purge valve C". dose anyone know where that would be located, and if it is something that I can pick up at any parts store, or do I have to go back to the "stealership" to get it?
thanks,
Keith

Something for EGR? Does that sound familiar?
The EGR system has a purge solenoid comprised of valves apparently.

the guy that scanned it said that it was part of the evap. emission system. I thought there was only one purge valve, on the evap canister, but apparently there are several in the evap system, I'm just not sure which one is purge valve "C"

there is a purge solenoid on the passenger fender just behind the headlamp assy there is 2 hoses going to it and one 2 wire connector white/black tracer wire and a pink/black tracer wire now you must make sure what code you have as there are many evap system codes and fault and many different repairs this is somewhat more complex than you may think especially if your not using the right code to diagnose

sense the check engine light has gone away, do you think it's worth it to take it to the dealership to have it scanned again? and would they be able to narrow down what the problem is, or is it not worth bothering with unless the light comes back on?
by the way, thanks for all your help,
Keith

First problem is the "auto zone" scanner. It is a very basic scanner. Go to a reputable, trusted repair shop, not the dealer who has a computer for total scans. They should be able to pinpoint your problem with a great amount of certainty. Also the fix will be much cheaper than the "stealership". Good luck!

thanks,
I've only driven it a few times sense the light went off, and all seems to be ok. but if it dose come back on, then I gues I'll just take it in to the dealership.
thanks again for all the help,

Wasn't sure if you knew how to retreive your codes but on any dodge chrysler you turn the ignition on and off three times(don't start the vehicle) then it should give you flash codes or display the code in the odometer.

klaz28,
thanks for the info, but actuaily, that dosn't work on my truck. the key thing worked on the "old" OBD systems, but when they switched to OBD II, which I belive was in 97 or 98, you could no longer retreive the codes by turning the key on and off. and sense my truck is a 99, turning the key on and off dose not show codes.
thanks anyway,
Keith

The key trick worked on my 97 so it must have been 98. Are you sure you are doing the key trick right. You must turn it on off on off on in three seconds. If that does not work let me know because i have never heard that the key trick does not work on the newer stuff. My father-in-law has a 98 1500 i will see if it works on his.

maybe that's why it didn't work when I tried it, I was not aware that the odomoter had to be on the "trip" setting. thanks for the info, I'll try it again tonight when I get home, and let ya know if it works.

Obviously, your truck must have the digital odometer, huh?

Yes, but if yours don't it should give you "flash codes".

I can't get the code readout on my '04 either. So do you end with the key in the "on" or "off" mode (I ended in on).

don't know if you solved this already, but I have a 97 ram with the 5.9 auto and my light came on. Code was 0441, which is the purge solenoid. I did both the Autozone scanner and the dealership, and they both read the same. I changed the purge solenoid, but the light came back on. I checked all vacuum lines, had good flow and no cracked/leaking hoses.
Here's the good part. I went to the pcm mounted on the rear firewall and disconnected all 3 wire harnesses. I cleaned them with contact cleaner and loaded them up with dialectric grease. Plugged them back in and the check engine light has not gone on ever since. I am not the only one that had this problem, so you might want to try it out. Cheap and easy!

sorry I've been away for a wile. just wanted to say thanks for all the help. the light never came back on, so I'm guessing it wasn't that big of a deal.
anyway, I have sense sold the truck. actuailly, we sold both my truck, and my wife's jeep grand cherokee, and got a "family friendly" mini-van. then I found a sweet deal on a 93 jeep wrangler, so now, the van is our daily driver, and the jeep is my weekend toy.

I had the same EVAP code on my 2001 Ram. Replaced the gas cap and reset the code. No more check engine light.

Thanks for the thought - I had the same one. That was my first try at the fix, the old gas cap change trick. Unfortunately, my check engine is still on.

I had some trouble getting my MIL check engine codes too at first. I was not waiting long enough for the check engine light to start flashing. I might take about 10 seconds after your sequence. On/off, on/off, on, then wait about 10 secs for the flashing to start.
Also, if you have an autozone near you, they will run an OBD scan for free and tell you the code(s). Those codes are not always perfect, but they might start you in the right direction.
Just guessing, but shifting funky can be from a transmission speed sensor or range sensor, and the dying could be vacuum line related. Hope that helps.
