Just got used 2002 lancer ES with 60K miles. However, the car has some knocking (engine knock)that occurs at moderate acceleration and randomly. The lady that sold me the car said that she had it checked at the dealership and they told her there was no way around it. Simply it means she had to live with it. I know it is bad for the engine and there is got to be a way of dealing with it. I have not tried the premium fuel option but that can become very costly and it does not seem to help all the time. Any Advice. Please help.

bring your car into the shops and have your ecu ignition timing retarded...otherwise these knoskings and pingings will kill your engine. however, in doing so, your car's performance will also be considerably retarded. theres no sure-win cure...the other option you have whereby your car's knocking can be improved and also an improvement in performance...look into higher octane PULP (gas). yes, they are costly but sometimes its worth the while.
