do you have an auto or manual? If auto, the tranny for the V6 doesn't have the strength to handle to torque of a 318.

your V6 tranny is designated 42RH or A-500 transmission. You'll need an A-518 or 46RH to work with a 318. As far as getting it, you can pick one up at a junkyard for around $500 or you can buy a new unit for around $1100.

The transmission will work, you just can't reef on it.

Alot of 96 & new dakota with a 5.2L come with the 42RE it will work fine might want to change out the torque converter with the right stall for the V8 thats all. I would be a good thing to do anyway with High mileage dodge.
