It is illegal to attempt suicide. I think this is the same way. The courts use the law to allow them to force the person to get help. Need a lawyer in here.

cutting your thumb off wont kill you. Suicide is illegal because it makes other people take the responsibility of dealing with your body and belongings. Not because they want you to have all your fingers. I agree he's got issues if he would really consider it though. But I dont believe hes serious. I dont think its illegal to tell people you'll cut your thumb off, but then not do it.

Doh... i read it too quickly. In that case, he could hire a surgeon to sever it (to make sure it's easily re-attached) and have it re-attached straight away. He goes away with the best part of $50k in the bank. Still risky but that's the best way to do it i guess....

I think that if he got a surgeon to sever his thumb and reattach it for fun, he would make millions when he sued for malpractice.

I would think that surgery like that without insurance(you really think there going to cover this?) would set you back about 7 grand. That would leave you with a potentially screwed up thumb and 43K. Would you sever a thumb for a used lexus?
