....stupid used sub....

As I said in another thread, I was pushing my system a little last night while driving through UConn's campus during a crazy party weekend. Well, this morning I noticed a nasty rattle coming from trunk that isn't there normally. Well, I looked at the sub, and thought the plastic cover glued to the cone looked a little loose. I touched it, and IT FELL OFF. Now I can look into the center of the sub, and I'm wondering if it's bad to run it without that plastic cover. Should I bother trying to glue it back on, or just leave it until I get a new sub sometime this summer? I may sell both my amp and sub and go for some decent stuff. Gotta love tax returns :).

Here's a pic showing the sub before it fell apart:

so your dust cap fell off?

you can glue it back on, but nows the time to go for something worth buying :)

I'm seriously thinking about it. You didn't answer whether or not I can run it without the dust cap, though. I'm watching ebay like a hawk. Anyone here have a decent 15" sub you don't need anymore? Like a RE Se or something.

a dust cap is there for a reason, to keep crap out of the coil former. with out one something may get down in there and screw up your coil. also, itcompletes the cone. unless it is a cone that didnt need a dust cap in the first place you need a dust cap. so basically if it has a hole where the dust cap was, glue it back on and sell the woofer. if there is no hole and it was there for show you dont need it but it will hcange the T/S params slightly because you are removing mass from the cone.
how much are you willing to spend on a woofer? SE's arent that expensive...

OK, what types of glue are ok to use? I've heard that silicone based glues have nasty fumes that hurt the foam surround. I suppose I could just hot glue it, but that probably wouldn't hold for too long.

I'm thinking like $125 or so... What do good amps go for?

CBFryman

Partsexpress.com....they have speaker glue. otherwise i would use epoxy.

for $125 you likely could get a used SE 15. is that 125 indepenant from the money you may make by selling your current woofer? sell that woofer to some suka` for way morethan what it is worth, or E-bay it if you are looking to upgrade....

04-23-2005, 01:52 PM
Heh, I was the sucka that bought it from some other sucka... I wonder if I can sell it again :p

Would contact cement work? I remember a while ago that people use contact cement for repairing surrounds, so I figure it would be ok for them.

CBFryman

well even silicone based glues wont hurt the surrond if it is in a vnetelated area. rubber cement should work, how well i dont know.

Ouch, that sucks Germany... I just glued my dust cap back on with some heavy duty contact cement, and I'm going to see about selling it locally before going to ebay.

I'm seriously debating between an Atlas 15 and a RE SE 15. I haven't gotten an email from RE yet, so I don't know what an SE goes for, but the Atlas is $160 shipped, plus it has the XBL^2 tech. Any big differences between those or other subs in that price range?

wiat, are you talking about hte very center with the writing on it, thats what fell off?

*off topic*
Where the hell do you buy RE stuff.

and whats an atlas?

Diceman83
04-26-2005, 06:33 PM
Yep, that's what fell off. It's glued back on now, way better than it was before.

There are 3 ways to get RE stuff: Direct, by calling them; Through a dealer, if one's near you; Used, from a friend or on eBay.

Here's the Atlas (http://www.ascendantaudio.com/Atlas%2015.htm). Pretty good for the money, but an SE is only a few bucks more, and people are telling me that it's gonna sound better. NGSM13 got quoted $185 shipped to Ohio for one.

Glad to see you got it glued back on. Actually, a dust cover does something more important than keeping dust and crap out. What it does is move air through the motor structure. So, when you are jamming, the sub creates heat, therefore the dust cap helps move air through the motor structure.

both subs look incredible. im thinking about 2 avlanche 15s, depending on how huge the box will need to be. i want to Knock pictures off the wall.

If you're aiming for that, go for XXXs... a single 18" would be plenty, just ask CBFryman. That's his goal I think, and he's got a smaller space than you do to put it in. Just remember that it's not just going to be the cost of the sub, the amp is gonna be 300 - 500, and you're gonna need a new alternator. You should probably do the "big 3" upgrade too (replacing all the wiring in the engine compartement with 0/1 gauge wire). A new battery or two would be a good idea too. All those expensive upgrades is why I'm happy with just having a single sub taking less than 500 watts.

Or you could ask sum1 who has real EXPERIENCE with one...and who JUST might own one right now... ;) ;) ;)

is i do get massive subs like that, im swithcing them into my next vehicle, so its a long term investment. im still looking in to it though. it says on there site that they dont NEED massive power, ive heard of them taking insane amounts of it,3000W+. im sitll looking aorund though cuz the alt and bats are gonna be expensive, and im not sure i want to put THAT much effort into this car. depends on how amazing the subs sound, im also looking @ RE's XXX line.

CBFryman
04-28-2005, 04:55 PM
1600w is thermal RMS. which means that is what the coil can handle but the sub doesnt nessicarily need that to reach full excursion. in a ported enclsore or even a decently small selaed enclsore it usually takes more than 1600w to reach a full 64mm P2P (*from the reading i have done)
3000w is probably for bups, NOT daily. 3000w is WAY too much for a sub rated to 1600 RMS.
if an XXX18 is too large getthe 15, it is still a performer. actually, even the XXX10 is kick ass, and the XXX line is chepaer than a lot subs in that class of performance and quality.

im hoping to be heard for a ways.

Why?
I HATE it when that is peoples only goal. If you just wanna get lous to annoy other people, get 2 15" L7's and give them 1000 watts each. Then proceed to drive around BLARING Late Night Tip with you trunk open...

The strero should be for you, not everyone else.
This is why people hate other people with bass in their cars...
(Looks like I'm going to be the forum grandpa)

hah, I'm younger than you and I feel the same way. We're fighting a losing battle on this forum though, most people here are all about getting loud (not all of them want to disturb the peace though). But not all forums are like this, if you haven't yet you might want to check out www.elitecaraudio.com, most people over there don't really care about getting loud, they focus on sound quality.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a setup that can get loud, but aleast do what you can to keep as much of that sound in your car.

That's all I'm saying.

I'll be running a sealed AA Ava, an I'm usually an "attention getter" type person, I just love it when people see the AA an think its flee market crap thats never been heard of......an then its heard.

perfect timing. i'm selling my 15" RE SE dual 4ohm. its the 2003 bewb cone though, not the smooth cone. good news is that it has been used for less than 3 hours. the surround is still stiff on it.

$125 shipped to the lower 48 states :smokin:

CBFryman

not a bad deal. Dice, you may want to pick it up. you will get one of RE's boob fetish cones.

Thanks! I'm working on an email now...

I'd delete that post though, as quickly as you can to keep the spam data miners from finding it... I've made it a policy to never post my email address in a place where the general internet can find it, and I have literally zero spam. Two different addresses for over 4 years. It works :)

i do want to try to keep as much of the sound in my car as possible, depending on how much the deadning is going to cost, i dont mind working on it for a while, im trying to keep the cost down as much as possible, the entire thing is already up to an estimated 2000$.

and i rarly get spam @ work, cuz we have 4 different spam filters on our network.

we have no spam at all.

We have our own department (of over 50 people) that checks on the email before it gets to us. lol. Talk about security

sound dedening isnt too expensinve. some decent stuff can be had for $1 a foot on ebay. 100-150sqft is enough to do most vehicles. hell, most door kits consist of like 12 sq ft and trunk kits like 25 sqft tops.
