I'm new to the site. Been reading it for a little while but been busy on snowmobile forums all winter. Out of snow, so I needed a "fix" elsewhere. HD owners welcome?

Interesting forum.

I have a question: how does a 1500 HD differ from a regular 1500?

I've just heard that the HDs have tougher/stronger suspension, maybe lower gears for towing trailers, uh, anyone actually know the difference?

The 1500HDs can have the 6.0L. I suppose leaf springs or somethin are stiffer too.

So, is the 1500 HD the same as what the "Heavy Half" (or "BIG 10," if you're a GMC guy) trucks used to be?

Yeap, I guess you could put it that way.

Ok, well about the only differenc in those were heavier rear leaf springs. My dad had a new '79 heavy half

Actually, the '01 and newer 1500HD is not a half ton at all. It uses the standard 2500 (non HD) frame and suspension with 8 lug wheels. GVWR is 8,600 lbs. 6.0 liter and 3.73 gears are standard I believe.

Thanks!
I ride an '05 Yamaha Vector 4 stroke. My best sled yet. I think I have 4 sled forums on my favorites list, but main forum is totallyamaha.com. Lots of good information there, and good folks.
