i had the same problem with a 95 S-10 and the mechs at a chevy dealership told me it was the clutch and when it was replaced it went away...im not gonna guarantee that thats whats wrong with yours cuz theres always a thousand problems that sometimes all have the same symptoms...but if you dont know alot about cars...just get it checked out...and 2 - there is no specific rpm in which to shift...its all in the feel of the car just becuz some cars have the little light that tells you when to shift doesnt mean thats when you shift lol

Check the fluid in your Clutch resovoir... if you keep adding some in and it keeps going down, its probably your slave cylander.

agree with crj. seems the easiest route for now. check that. ghost-cavy the mech said it was your clutch. for all you know could have the something else and they just put a clutch in anyway to get your $$$.
