Future of Pontiac? Possible Pontiac owner asking.

I am seriously considering the Vibe for my next car; however, earlier this year in The Washington Post business section I read that GM was considering putting both Pontiac and Buick on the chopping block.
Is there any truth to this? Should I still consider the Vibe?

GM has been analyzing their market position and throwing out ideas about how they might strengthen it. Merging Buck and Pontiac has been suggested.
I doubt it will happen, as Pontiac's image has improved considerably over the past few years. Discontinuing the Firebird is seen as a mistake. The reception GTO got wasn't too good, but with the '05 model, that's changing. The car is badass, even though the styling isn't "retro" (a GOOD thing, in my opinion). Mustang will undoubtedly out-sell it, but it won't touch it in a drag race...
Solstice is to be available in the near future. I doubt GM would introduce a new model for performance if they weren't gonna be around to support it. G6 isn't as popular as they thought it would be, but Sunfire and Grand Prix sales are as strong as ever.
Don't look for Pontiac to go away any time soon.

I would agree. Pontiac is a core GM brand, at least for the next few years. GM cannot function on Chevy and Cadillac alone.

I would think they will eliminate Buick before Pontiac. GM is going to start stepping up Saturn and put them in their line up as kind of a cheap Cadillac. I work at a Saturn dealer and from what I've seen, GM is definetly moving forward with that plan. Hopefully when they start to restructure things, Pontiac will lose the Montana and the equinox/vue clone. They need to start producing more of the powerful cars and let chevy do the more "utility" and grocery getter vehicles.

A buddy of mine works for GM, and says there are no plans to cut either company.
But I do doubt Pontiac's place in the market now...they have nothing to replace the Sunfire, while Chevy has replaced the Cavalier with the Cobalt...so Pontiac is without an entry-level sports coupe...

Pontiac will likely make a Solstice coupe.

Eh, that's hardly entry level...not gonna be easily affordable, like the J-body line...
