'95 Escort Wagon... A/C works.......... sometimes

OK... here's the scoop on the Scort.

The A/C blows ice cold... when it works. The compressor sometimes will run for a little while and then quit. It may not run at all on some occasions. The compressor acts the same way with the defrost, may or may not run.

Any ideas??

The A/C compressor clutch should cycle off and on in most cases.

yeah its most likely the clutch for the compressor. mine went out for good, but I never used the a/c anyway, so I just too out the entire a/c system, lose a pulley, gain some hp

Might just check the tension on the pulley, if it's too loose so its not driving the clutch, that'd do it too. It'd be a lucky breaki fyou just need an $8 belt rather than $150 clucth/compressor.

The belt tension seems OK.

The normal cycle of the compresor is not the issue. It will run for a few minutes, quit for 45 minutes or more, maybe come back on, maybe not.
It may not come on at all.

Any way to check if the compressor is bad?
