New E brake handle install...

I have a '99 Civic DX and I bought a nice little E-brake handle and didn't get a boot, yet. I know how it goes in.(screws and an allen wrench)

Well, you might laugh at me, lol, but how do you actually take off the stock one?

It says on the new E-brake instructions that there might be cutting involved, but I don't want to start hacking away at it and find out it still won't come off.

Can I unscrew it with pliers, or do I need a box cutter to cut straight down the middle(would it sharp enough)?

I have heard this is actually hard. I mean, I have helped family with engine work but I can't even do this. I kinda feel embarrassed .:(

Update: Yeah, I tried to heat it off and twist it, but ended up cutting it with a razor. My aftermarket one didn't fit, but I didn't have the time to wait for a reply from you guys, so I used a friend's drill press and I got it in using a hammer, oven mitt, and wd40.
