Stuck in 4Lo

Our truck is stuck in 4lo. It's a used truck that is new to us. We live off dirt roads, our driveway isn't done and it had mud and snow so my husband used 4lo to get out. At the bottom of the driveway (1/10 mile long) he tried to switch back to 2hi on a road with better base.

It's stuck in 4lo.

We are shifting into 4lo and 2hi by putting the car in neutral and pressing the 4lo followed by 2hi. The 2hi lights up but it does not engage, then the 4lo lights up and it's back in 4lo again.

What is the procedure for getting in and out of 4lo and 2hi on a 2000 chevy s10?

Do we need to get this serviced?

Can you help us get outof 4lo?

After some research I am guessing...

a.) actuator
b.) vacuum issue
c.) encoder issue

And none of those is any good, but that list is best to worst case scenario. I did not realize you could get out of 4lo in park, too, but you can.

I am so glad hubs insisted on a warranty.

I'm gonna tell him to try to get it out of 4lo by shooting from park instead of neutral. Any other ideas to get us back to the dealer without a big fat ol' inconvenient tow?

Our little kiddo has a bad fever right now and I just want to get the dang car there with the least hassle.

I don't really use 4lo on my 85 but I believe that I have to be in Park. and Neutral might work although I haven't tried it.

I'm told that with the push button 4x you might have to back up 6 feet to disengage it

Good luck, and I hope that your kid feels better soon

sounds like the encoder motor is dying. try rolling slowly in nuetral and shifting into 4hi. if you can get it into 4hi it should go into 2hi

I'd like to thank you for your help. The dealership ended up sending a tow truck out here anyways. *sigh* I hope it's not much over 100 dollars because that is the part of towing they cover. Please don't laugh at this question. Can the encoder lose it's programming somehow?
