pros and cons of losing the screen in the MAF

I was thinking about removing the screen in the OEM MAF unit. I was wondering what people thought about doing this. I read that your car can "learn" this change and it won't really help after you drive for about 200 miles. Also that there might be drivablity problems by doing this. Didn't know what to think. Oh and how much would this really help to do?
thanks,
E

Pros - Possible performance gain, how much no one knows for sure.
Cons - May get a random MAF Sensor DTC error code and may turn on the SES light.
As to the ECU/PCM learning the change its possible. Aftermarket MAF sensors program the internal components to inhibit this. I've got a Granatelli HP MAF sensor on an '02 Alero GL2, 3.4L V6. It has better calibration and a wider bore increasing airflow. Doesn't trigger any error codes, doesn't void the warranty and is 50 state legal. Retail approx. $450. On Ebay for around $250.00. You can feel the difference when accelerating in the seat of your pants. Picked up approx. 2/10th of a second in the quarter mile ET at the strip.

Thanks for the help. Yeah, I've been to the website and looks like it would be a good upgrade, just more than i'd like to spend considering i still need to tint the windows, add a air intake and probably redo the brakes.
If I was to get that error code to come on, could i just replace the screens and then it would go back to normal?

The answer to you question is YES. The ECU will relearn and any possible error will be eventually cleared after a drive cycle. Or if you have an odb-ii scanner you can use it just to clear the DTC code and SES light, if any.
Take your time, overall the Alero is a good car. It took us two years to get ours to where it is today.
BTW - Just be careful if you decide to remove the screen. It could bend and possibly get damaged if you knick it with a tool. Good luck!
