2003 XLT Axle Howling

2003 XLT 4X4 with Auto, Limited slip, 4.6 V8, with 27K miles

Front axle is howling when driving. Sounds like the car is in low gear but is actually in Drive. If I kill the engine and coast in neutral the noise is still there. Also may have same noise in rear axle as well.

All of the front bearings have been replaced and noise is still there. Dealer thinks its the hubs and they are on backorder. Are there that many problems that a backorder is necessary.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be?

your vehicle fits in the catigory for a rear diff.ford has a known problem and the rearend would need to be rebuilt. have seen the wheel bearing problem to,thats why they are on national backorder.

It was the front axle bearings, they were all pitted. Since axle was apart dealer replaced all of them. Silence has been restored. First guess was the hub bearings and that was wrong.
