replacing oil pump

After reading through the forum I came to the conclusion that it is my oil pump that needs replaced. I went ahead and ordered a new oil pump and a gasket cover but does anyone know a website I can read to walk me through changing this? Or has anyone does this themselves?

I have a '99 VW Passat 1.8 20V turbo, 4 banger...it has about 87K miles.

I'm trying desperately to try and save a few bucks(I'm a recent college grad with no money!)

I was quoted $2300 from the dealership, there is no way I can afford that. Anyhow, if someone has a website I would really appreciate it!! Thanks

REplacing he oil pump is a very involved job on a 1.8t. You have to lower the subframe to reach the bolts that hold the oil pan to the trans. IT should be about 8hrs labor max unless you want an alignment which is i dunno how much. I would also suggest replacing the oil pan as well because at 90k miles the drain plug is problably stripped out neway.

Check for oil sludging under the oil cap. take it off and look inside and see if there is any crusty black buildup. If there is, looks like theres more damage than you think. If you ran your car with little or no oil after it was changed then I bet theres some good bearing wear and jiffy lube should be puttin in a new engine cuz THEY messed up.

Thanks for the response veedubmechanic, I realized after looking at the job that I would not be able to do it. I took it into a mechanic that I know, he quoted the price at $250.00. If it takes 8 hours to do I have a feeling he will try and hustle a few more bucks out of me.

I drove the car for about 24 hours before I noticed the problem. I did take off the oil cap and I didn't notice any crusty black buildup but I wasn't really looking for it. I really hope there is no serious damage done.

Thank you for the help though, I appreciate the advice.
