Hey,
I biought a 92 golf because it was in really good condition. I want to get more power out of the engine. I guess I dont understand if the car will run fine and have heat if I replace the stock air box with a cold air intake? How is this done? Also, what is the difference in 92 8V golf and a 8V 92 Gti? I imagine its the same block, what need to be changed to basically have a Gti motor? Also, are the transmission beefier in a Gti or about the same?

An 8v is an 8v, whether its the 1.8L 8v or 2.0L 8v. Many mkIII Golf GTIs came with the same 8v availible in the stock GL, so there's nothing different whatsoever about the engine or tranny.

If you buy a CAI, you might gain a bit more power higher in the RPM range. You'll have to be careful in times of wet weather though, as you could suck up water and hydrolock your engine.
Non-CA intakes are usually said to be a waste of money, as they tend to suck in hot air. The stock mkIII airbox does a great job of shielding, a common mod is to drill holes in the fender side / bottom of the airbox; combined with a K&N air filter it produces the same approximate gains as a $200 intake. I've done this mod to mine, it takes a minute or two more for the engine to warm up to operating temperature, but no big deal.

You didn't say where you are located though, so not sure if you have a Euro 1992 (mkIII) or NA 1992 (mkII).

Thanks for the reply. So maybe getting a better exhaust header and and a performance exhaust will give me a little more power. I guess what I don't understand is it seems as though the airbox on the 92, acts as two things. Seems to be something with the heater. I live in the US, so I hope that helps.
