What does a motor weigh when pulled from the car?

Hello

I am fixing a 1988 Mustang LX with a 5L (302) H.O. It has a lot of leaks and looses a great deal of oil. I want to pull the motor from the car and want to buy an engine stand and would like to know how much the motor with all the accessories on it might weight.

I need to know this because engine stands come rated for diffrent weights and I wouldn't want the stand to buckle under the strain if I get a small one. I don't want to spend a fortune on it because I don't pull motors from cars every day. Can anyone help me out on this?

stock motors with iron blocks/heads, such as your 5.0, weigh between 700 and 900 pounds, if memory serves. murray's sells a perfectly capable stand for a good price.

I think they are more like 500-600 with everything on.

Thanks for the information, it'll help me pick out the right motor stand for my work load. I actually called a Ford dealer and the mechanic said that he thought it wouldn't weigh more than 450 lbs tops!

I was sceptical so I kept looking and I found a site that lists it at 411 lbs without the starter, smog pump, power steering pump, AC compressor and flywheel. But it's not an official source but a dude that weighed it on a scale.

So short story long... an engine stand rated at 750lbs (the smallest they sell) should be goood enough for my garage!

Thanks again!
