cost for front rotors & pads replacement

The dealer asked for $500 above, i think it is way too much, any idea about a reasonable price before I check with other shops. Thanks

I paid $70 for hawk performance pads at pep-boys and $140 for power slott rotors from them as well. Are you going to have a shop replace your brakes and rotors? If thats the case....why? You can easily do it yourself for a fraction of the cost.

Yea it is faily easy to do on most cars. and 500 would be way to much.... i say for oem replacement rotors and a good ceramic pad your looking at 125 tops... to do it yourself. and a shop 200 tops and that is making money... they could have it done in 20 mins...

I bought oem replacement powerslot rotors for $130 and Carbon Metallic Pads for $40. Install was free!

Do it yourself, if somone was to show you how easy it is, you'd be kicking your self in the ass, and pissen away soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much money.

I agree with the others. Get the book and fix it yourself. Only tools you will need is a 3/8" allen socket, ratchet wrench (for the socket) and a c-clamp to push the caliper piston back in. I did a front brake job with rotors for 40 bucks. I used the cheap parts but they are holding up very well. Beats spending 500 bucks. Also you can try shopping around if you just don't want to do it yourself. Any independent garage or service station can handle this job.

Its loads of fun. Shit, i just did 2 new hub assemblys tonight in 2 hrs. I had to rip everything off... its a piece of apple pie.

Yeah, a c-clamp is nice, it's not easy without one, especially when the old pads are down to almost nothin'. I had to use a crowbar with the old pads in it, it took 2 ppl. 20 mins. to open the pass. side caliper. Other than that it's one of the easiest DIY jobs.

oh gods don't remind me of brakes...

One time I had a friend do one brake and I did the other... he fully tightened some weird screw that was only meant to be hand tightened down there on my rotor. We did a rotor and brake replacement...

I'm doing 80 down the freeway in the old Nissan (which was the car we changed the stuff on) CHHSRRRSHHARAWR!!!!!!!!!

and I nearly float on into a semi.... his side... was just... there was bearing shavings all over.... and after I got it home.... The pieces of bearing were melted to the hub.... oh the horror.. oh the horror...

so now I do all the stuff myself. I don't need some other horrific thing like that happening....

I just found out that my brother in law just spent $300 for some witch doctor of a michanic to swap out his old rotors for new ones. :loser:

I would have done it for a six pack. :lol:

if you are looking for the cheapest route and they are ok pads, do the job, i got em on my cavy. the ones from auto zone, i think like $18, there are good and oem rotors at auto zone are like $27 so your looking at like $80 to do it yourself. lot better than $500. sounds like i need to change jobs if they are charging $500 for brakes.

Make sure you use a good grease on the sliders if you do them!

I'm about to do a rotor / pad replacement on a 1995 Cavalier.

I did the brakes on this car before. When I changed the brakes I figure I would try to remove the rotor and clean everything up. The rotor was stuck dead to the hub. I didn't want to put any force on them since I wasn't replacing them at the time.

As far as I know there isn't anything holding the rotor on a cavalier except for the caliper an the wheel? Am I correct?

To get the rotor off how much force can I use? A rubber mallet / dead blow, hammer, or sledge hammer? Where should the force be applied?

I've also heard of using heat? Where should heat be applied?

I'm not a mr know it all when it comes to cars, but i'm gonna be doing my own in a few days or so, since their warped badly. i'm not sure where you live, but i got 2 new rotors for $15 each, and about $50 for the pads. theres no way i'd pay $500. i'd rather put that towards replacing my transmission. lol
