To put #1 piston at TDC: Remove the #1 sparkplug. Insert a 1/4" dowel rod in the spark plug hole. Rotate the crankshaft by hand until the dowel rod is at it's highest point. The crankshaft timing mark should be aligned
with the TDC mark. Both #1 intake and exhaust valve rocker arms should be free (not trying to compress the valve).

In theor you don't even need teh dowel, just look for the timing mark on the crank pulley to be at 12 oclock.
Although I have a very foggy recolloection that on the 1.9L there was something about linng up a missing pulley tooth with the crank sensor?? So foggy....
