Crappy Speakers

Hi Everyone,
Here is the problem. My speakers are crappy, and dying. My drivers side dash speaker comes on every once in a while, and I think one of the rear speakers is also shorting out. I want to replace them all but keep my factory deck so I can use my steering wheel controls.
What speakers should I be lookin' for? Should they all be from the same manufacturer, or are some manufacturers better for some speakers (dash vs door) than others?
I also have a remote tape deck that I want to yank out and replace with a DVD head unit (in the same floor consol spot), and hook it into the factory system so when I switch to tape, it really switches to my DVD and uses the same speakers.
Is this possible? If so what kind of DVD head unit to I need to do this?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Slim
