Auto ---> Manual??

My 1992 Mazda 323 transmission is GONE! it was an auto.
Now...I am looking for an automatic tranny to replace it with, but i'm thinking, why not go 5speed if I can?
Since I am replacing the tranmission, would it be feasible(sp?) to replace it with a manual tranny? (I mean..i know it CAN be done...but will it cost me an arm and a leg?)
Approximate costs for replacing with an auto tranny?
Approximate costs for replacing with a manual tranny? how much work involved?
thats basically what i'm looking for now! I am not very mechanically inclined, but I am learning. (the tranny work will not be done by me probably) Thanks guys!

Well, you're not going to hear this much from a 17 years old kid. But I personaliy drive a 2002 Sentra GXE with a 5 Spd myself. I drive it everywhere and everyday, to go out, school, whatever. At first of course I chose it because I thought it would be more fun to drive and oh it's "cooler" n crap like that. But after only like half a year with a 5 Spd, I'm already sick of it. Sick of being in traffic, sick of driving long distance, just sick of the 5 Spd.
But then again i live in the cities..........if you live in the rural area, of course I would suggest you get the stick shift.
I have no idea how much it would cost, but i know for sure it'd cost a bundle. So why not just get a new or used car? Because ur car is aging, i suspect that there'd be many more future problems to come later on.
Well, what do i know..........i'm just a kid.

I appreciate the response.
I am just as much of a kid as you are, just a year less of a kid. haha.
I haven't driven the mazda for 4 months, I drive a much nicer auto. The problem is it isn't my car, its my parents...i just want to drive my own! i was saving up to get myself a new car (actually a new USED car...) but i've decided I might as well fix up the mazda, and drive it myself till i can afford a better car. (I am scared of used cars..).
Anyways, not much point in this message besides saying thanks.. haha/
I like 5spd better, but the main reason for wanting the swap is that I may have a donor car with all necesary parts, but for a manual.
